IG connection troubleshooting

Step-by-step fixes for IG authentication, API key and environment errors.

Last updated 3 September 2026

IG requires four fields in Trade Optic's Connect IG form: username, password, apiKey, and environment (live or demo). All four must match your IG account exactly.

  1. Confirm you can log in at ig.com with the same username and password.
  2. In My IG → Settings → API, create a new API key for the environment you selected (Demo keys for Demo, Live keys for Live).
  3. Copy the full API key — IG keys are long alphanumeric strings with no spaces.
  4. In Trade Optic, select Demo or Live before entering credentials. A Live account with Demo selected (or the reverse) causes authentication failure.
  5. If you recently changed your IG password, update it in Trade Optic by disconnecting and reconnecting.

Common error messages:

  • Authentication failed — wrong username, password, API key, or environment mismatch.
  • API key required / invalid — key missing, truncated, revoked, or created for the wrong environment.
  • Account locked — too many failed attempts; unlock via IG support or wait and retry.
Never send your broker password, complete API key, authentication token or payment details through email, direct messages or support chat. Only enter connection details inside Trade Optic’s secure broker-connection form. If a credential may have been exposed, revoke it through your broker immediately.
IG session tokens expire periodically. If sync stops after weeks of working, disconnect and reconnect with a fresh API key.
